AMIS

AMIS is a software program that you can use to read DAISY books. AMIS is a multilingual player for reading books complying with DAISY standards.

AMIS Software is a part of the DAISY for All (DFA) project, whose goal it is to bring DAISY talking book technology to persons with disabilities in developing countries. Our goals are: 1)To provide playback software in local languages, especially those in Southeast Asia; and 2)to address multiple disabilities by offering a variety of ways to interact with a Daisy publication.

All software developed by this project is open source and released LGPL. This project incorporates some GPL third-party software. If you are interested in using all or part of AMIS in a closed-source environment, please contact us first to find out what you must do to respect the licensing terms of these third-party components. AMIS supports DAISY 2.02 books, with plans for DAISY 3 support coming soon. Books are played back with synchronized phrase-level highlighting.

The player is available with a choice of 'skins' to change the appearance and a number of plug-ins to support Joystick control, one switch scanning, Braille input & output, voice recognition control, large font display and SAPI 4 Text-to-speec.

The tabbed navigation sidebar supports different views of the table of contents, based on category: sections, pages, and special items like footnotes, producer Notes, and sidebars. The navigation window can be toggled and dragged around the screen.

Navigation

The navigation options include granularity control for heading-level navigation. You can set the player to show a specific level of headings, based on what is available in the publication.

View modes

The default view looks like a typical windows application, while the basic view (shown below) looks more like the old AMIS, with a bottom row of large buttons and no menu. Although the navigation window is off in basic view, you can re-enable it with a keypress.

Control the contrast and text size

With AMIS, you can enlarge the text and use high-contrast colors. The screenshot below shows this, as well as the floating navigation toolbar.

Time-scale modification for the audio playback

Listen at half to double speed with no pitch distortion.

Built in preferences dialog

This allows you to set basic options, change colors, and select language packs.

Thanks for the comment: The links are now updated to the current home and download sites. The previous repository at Sourceforge is obviously not currently used. So where is the source repository now ?
