Blink control for mouse click trough web cam

Posted by lizama_m at 2009-08-25 23:50

I have a quadriplagic patient whos only consistent movement is blinking. She could use the computer thorugh scanning if she could only use the blinking action as a left mouse click. We tried external blink switches (e.g. TASH Scatir switch) but it is not reliable and it cannot distinguish between an involuntary blink (quick blink) and a voluntary long blink. We have also tried EMG switches with not much success (they react to both the quick and the slow blink).

There are several face detection and head tracking web cam applications out there. some can even do a mouse click by blinking (e.g. Headmouse 2) but they are calibrated by head movement which this person does not have and they are intended for head control mouse operation, not sacnning.

THUS...

We need a web cam based application than can detect blinking and send a left mouse click as the output signal. The system should have basic adjustable parameters, such as blink duration/delay, in order to distinguish between a voluntary and an involuntary activation.

Any help wil be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
