Voice Control of Computers in general

It would be nice if the development community would look into voice control of computers, running different operating systems.  The best product on the market only runs under Microsoft Windows and is running on borrowed time.  It was last updated in 1997 and I'm talking about DragonDictate.  Yes, yes I know that this has been (allegedly) surpassed by Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but this product (even release 9) isn't totally hands-free!

I know that Microsoft are trying (!) with their new operating system Vista, but I don't expect miracles.

I would like to see some development interest in this purely for selfish reasons as I am reliant upon this for operating my machine.

I guess that you are talking about control of a computer by operating the GUI with voice? Perhaps  command line control may be a little more effective as it is naturally text based? My limited impression, mainly from ITCH support calls is that it really is hard work, whereas Dragon is pretty good at continuous text input.

Is there any R&D into this?

It has been my impression (and I have used it quite a lot) is that Naturally Speaking can be used to control a PC hands free - but you may need the professional version.

I would be interested in the ways that NS fails to be 'hands free'

From my (admittedly limited) investigation into Naturally Speaking as an aid against RSI, the software indeed claims complete hands-free use of the PC, but is made much easier with the Professional version, which allows you create custom macros, making common tasks quicker and easier to do.

Of course, this is only a part-solution because I've heard reports of issues with getting even the Pro version to behave nicely with Firefox, despite working quite nicely with Thunderbird.
