Switch controlled draw/paint program

A recent thread on senit (todo: get link) discussed the need for a simple switch controlable painting/drawing prgram. Using an switch overlay like SAW adds extra cognative requirements for the user.

I previously spoke to Bill Kendrick of TuxPaint about this idea and he is interested in adding such features. Interesting design issues exist in dealing with the interface modes, as with controlling music programs (see Tim Anderson of Drake Music Project).

Perhaps the c++ SDL multimedia library would work well for switch control as I found it easy to use the pyGame binding for a simple switch controlled CD player.

Two minds one snort as they say.

I have been thinking about this for some time and have written an outline of such a program.  My idea was to combine the sort of creative tools you have in Jasc Paintshop Pro with the accessibility of AccessMaths.

Hola, I have talked to both David and Steve about my interest in this project... I am in the process of disclosing some of my research so I am able to share more info, but in the meanwhile, I think using something like Python + PyGame is a very good idea because it would be both easy to program and to modify. Besides, python is multiplatform (meaning the code works in Windows, Linux, Mac and many other OS) I have showed David a python-based demo of one possible strategy for single-switch "free-hand" drawing that may be useful for AccessPaint and, as soon as I am able to, I will make the code available here. Of course, the idea of simply incorporating additional features to TuxPaint is also very good and maybe initially more feasible than comming up with an entirely new thing... has anyone started any work on this? is there any funding available?

cheers!

In the UNIX spirit of hooking up smaller tools to do a task and as the web is becoming the platform of choice I think this means something along the lines of AjaxSketch (http://www.ajaxsketch.com) or a paint equivalent, using SVG, through FireFox and with GOK/SAW access. I believe that there is work on SVG accessibility. It would need a local
install option that looks like a homogenised application.
