Why Open Source my Software?
Well, why not? There are few disadvantages and many advantages:
If you have got to this page then YOU have software that could assist someone with a disability! This page will try and persuade you to make it open source - although in the end, it comes down to personal choice and philosophy.
- Wider audience - why did you write your software? If you want people to USE your software then open source it - it is a proven distribution method that will get your software to more people of relevance.
- Better development - open your code and it will allow a small community of dedicated developers to contribute to and help evolve it…
- Meet some real needs - open software allows customisation and evolution to meet the real needs of users…. How does software development get that close to real users?
- Be part of the OATS movement - OATS is using the open source development model like it has never been used before - the potential benefits to the 'small market' of users is massive.
- Expand your horizons - closed code will stay static and likely only be used in one scenario - open your code and the possibilities are endless - AT is just good HCI and principles from AT have and will impact on the wider community (take predictive texting as an example, this started as AT, went mainstream and has now come back!).
- Quedos - shy of your code? Don't be - releasing code is a brave step but gains a lot of respect within the programming community
- Make some money? - this isn't impossible with open source - you just don't charge for the privelidge of restricting your code but for other things. There are many successful business models built around OSS. LINKS
- The next big thing - Open source is a big thing, it is the bigest technological change since sliced bread and it is growing… Government, business, education and many others are realising the disadvantages of proprietory code and standards and making the change.
OK, perhaps you are not persuaded - just log on to the user forums and chat about it to some users.
